Being conscious of a dream has always come natural for me. Upon waking I am with full memory of where I was and what was said. At a young age this was odd, to recollect the vivid experience but not understand the difference in time and space. Now it is one of my favorite experiences and has allowed for my creativity to bloom into the artist I am today.
Through writing I have a better grasp on everything, but especially the dream world, whether it be spacing out during a daydream or REM sleep. What I see as intangible at first; an idea, a visual, a goal or something completely unordinary ... I then work to bridge the gap and carry it into the tangible form. I call this 'follow through' as it being the most important tool for any creative wishing to create.
Installation art works to transform the perception of a three-dimensional space and has always captivated me in a way unlike other mediums. Like a dream, the reality is altered for the moment creating a temporary exhibit. I find this form of art can shape shift your mood by bringing the experience to your environment for you to unfold in.
This project was was self ran, self funded, self created, and self loved. I am simply creating the world inside of me on a physical level, and as my space alters so will my art.
The installation was first created to set the scene for my upcoming yoga workshop INVERTICAL, which was photographed by a long time friend and talented artist Jorgen Burt of @studio_jorg. We've been collaborating since 2014 with a full range of content from street to studio aesthetics, so it felt right to bring him on for this new creation. Our work together has always felt natural with a cohesive vision. Jorgen's style is straight up 'intuitive' with his unique way to capture the in-between moments that feel raw and unfiltered. I let him do his thing, and he lets me do mine. Together we create an otherworldly expression and I'm happy to say Jorgen has been around since day one supporting my wacky ideas.
When Sierra Mckenzie and Kate Starling of @PeachPitProductions offered to create a video showcase of my work I was ecstatic. Sierra and I had met briefly through a photoshoot she was filming and stay connected online. I had been feeling like I was 'in process' for so long and not really knowing what that all meant, but with her one-of-a-kind work I felt we would lay it all out, fluidly and for real. It hit me when I saw these two babes setting up all their lights and equipment in my 'studio' (which just happened to be my room) that this piece of art that I built with bare hands had a pulse. We were live on the set .. my eyes filled with stars, Sierra a skilled director with vision and Kate being the producer real dreams are made of. It was seamless and we were happy.
I keep going back to this idea that the 'creative process' doesn't have to make sense, it just has to get started. The installation itself ties in my experience of dream memories and loving this quality within the human experience. I am deeply grateful to show up in this way and transform the space I am given. Through all of this I feel a sense of a connected reality, tethered to this one, and beyond it.
Thank you to all the talented artists who shared a perspective in this dream come true .. collaboration is the key to my heart.
